Durdle Door Viewpoint

That limestone arch rising 150 feet from the Dorset coast is the real deal - a natural wonder that actually lives up to the hype. Durdle Door commands attention the moment you round the cliff path from West Lulworth, and yes, it's worth every step of the descent and the equally brutal climb back out.

The viewpoint itself is free and accessible year-round, though the path can get muddy after rain. Allow a solid two hours if you're walking from the nearby car parks - the inclines are proper steep, and the shingle beach at the bottom gets crowded in summer. Photographers will camp here for hours chasing light; families with young kids need to know it's not a quick tick-box stop.

What makes it sing is the geology. That arch took millions of years to carve out, and standing beneath it, you feel the weight of that timescale. The views back along the coast toward Weymouth are excellent, especially on clear days. The water's cold enough to take your breath away, but swimmers and kayakers make the most of it when conditions allow.

Stay at Durdle Door Holiday Park itself - it's practically on the doorstep, just 0.1 miles away - and you can head down at dawn before the crowds arrive. The wider Purbeck coast has plenty more to explore: Lulworth Cove is ten minutes' drive, and the South West Coast Path offers endless walking. It's not a standalone destination, but it's the jewel in an already strong coastal patch.
