Duthie Park

The moment you walk through the gates at Duthie Park in Ferryhill, you're struck by just how much ground there is to cover here. This isn't some postage-stamp garden - it's a proper 44-acre park with distinct sections that genuinely reward a proper explore.

The formal gardens are the main draw, all Victorian hedging and manicured beds, but what really makes it tick is the woodland. There are actual trails through native trees rather than just pavement loops, which means families with restless kids will find them occupied for a solid couple of hours rather than the usual fidgeting after forty minutes.

Walkers get the best of it. The paths meander enough that you can't see the whole thing from the entrance, so there's always another bend worth investigating. Bring waterproofs though - it's Aberdeenshire, and the ground drains poorly after rain.

You could spend two to three hours here without it feeling forced, maybe more if you're the type who sits on benches and watches birds. It's free to enter and there's parking, which makes it a solid half-day add-on if you're staying at Deeside Holiday Park just down the road.

The real test: it won't blow your mind, but it's honest work. A proper park that does what it says without any faffing about.
