Walking out across the Northumberland moors near Hexham, you'll stumble upon earthworks that punch above their weight as archaeological sites - these aren't manicured tourist attractions with interpretation boards, but genuine Iron Age or medieval fortifications that you can actually read with your own eyes. The undulating ground tells the story: raised banks, ditches, the ghost of a settlement that once mattered. It's the sort of place where you arrive expecting ten minutes and find yourself still circling the perimeter an hour later, trying to work out the layout in your head.

History enthusiasts will lap this up. The landscape archaeology here rewards close looking - you need to move around the site, change your angle, sometimes step back to see the bigger picture. Children might find it less immediately gripping unless they're the sort who like clambering on ancient earthworks, which, fair warning, they absolutely can do here.

No visitor centre, no café, no faffing about. It's free, it's open whenever, and you can spend as long as you like. Allow an hour if you're genuinely interested; twenty minutes if you're just ticking it off. The proximity to Wild Northumberland Glamping and the cluster of camping options around Stonehaugh and Bellingham makes this a solid addition to a wider Northumberland walking holiday - couple it with a walk along the Tyne Valley and you've got a proper afternoon sorted. Best visited when the ground's dry; it gets boggy otherwise.
