Easter Glentarken

The scattered stones at Easter Glentarken don't look much at first glance, but this is an Iron Age fort that once commanded the landscape around Crieff. What you're standing among are the remains of a settlement dating back well over two thousand years - ramparts and defensive works that would have been properly formidable when intact.

It's the sort of place that rewards a bit of wandering and imagination. The site sits on rising ground with decent views across Perthshire, and on a clear day you can work out why someone chose to build a settlement here. The earthworks are still visible if you know what to look for, though they're subtle - this isn't some reconstructed fortress with visitor centre and gift shop.

Historically minded walkers will find it worthwhile, particularly if you're already exploring the Crieff area. It's free, accessible, and takes maybe half an hour to properly look round without feeling rushed. Families might find it a bit underwhelming unless the kids are genuinely interested in Iron Age Scotland; there's no play equipment or interactive stuff, just archaeology and landscape.

If you're staying at Loch Earn Leisure Park just over a mile away, it's an easy addition to a morning's walking round the area. Twenty Shilling Wood further out works as a base too if you're planning several days exploring Perthshire's archaeological sites. Worth combining with other local walks rather than making a special trip on its own.
