Eastover Pond

The water at Eastover Pond sits grey and still, ringed by reeds and the kind of quiet you don't often find near Bridgwater. It's a working pond rather than a beauty spot - nothing fancy, no café, no amenities - but that's partly why it works. Birdwatchers come here seriously. You'll spot mallards, herons if you're patient, and in winter the place pulls in diving ducks that don't venture to flashier spots. The walk around it takes about twenty minutes at an easy pace, flat the whole way, which means it's good for anyone but especially families with younger kids who'll tire of steep climbs. Bring binoculars. Bring a notebook if you're into that. Don't come expecting manicured lawns or information boards. This is the Somerset Levels at their most unglamorous and genuine. The pond itself looks industrial from certain angles - it serves a purpose beyond recreation - but that authenticity has its own appeal. If you're staying at one of the caravan parks clustered round here (Secret Valley and The Hideout are both within a few miles), Eastover is the sort of place to escape to between longer days out. It won't eat up hours of your time, but it'll give you space to think, and in a holiday that means something. Go early morning or dusk when the light's better and the birds more active. Admission appears free. Definitely worth thirty minutes while you're in the area.
