Eilean na h-Aibhne

An island wrapped in old-growth Scots pine, sitting right in the middle of the River Shin near Ardgay. It's a proper wild spot - the kind of place where you half expect to see a capercaillie or golden eagle. The main track loops through the woodland, offering decent views across the water and into the surrounding glens.

Walkers will find it satisfying rather than challenging. You're looking at maybe an hour here, depending on how much time you spend just standing about absorbing the atmosphere. The forest floor is soft with needles, the air smells like resin and damp earth, and there's genuine quietness - rare enough in the Highlands these days.

It works well as a stop on a longer day out rather than a destination in itself. Ardgay sits on the A837, so it slots neatly between other valley walks. If you're staying at Ardgay Glamping, it's practically on your doorstep. Bring binoculars if you're into birdwatching; the river attracts osprey in summer.

Best visited when the light's low - early morning or late afternoon bring out the character of the old pines. Rain doesn't spoil it; if anything, the forest feels more atmospheric when it's damp. Worth the short visit, though don't expect facilities or information boards. It's the kind of place that rewards you for turning up without fuss.
