Elmesthorpe Plantation

The woodland around Elmesthorpe, just south of Leicester, is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan a trip around - but that's precisely why it works. It's a proper forest walk, the kind where you can actually lose yourself among the trees for an hour without hearing the ring road. The plantation itself is mixed woodland, decent for stretching your legs if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Fortway Farm or Mallory Meadows.

Walkers will get the most out of it. Families with young kids might find it a bit limited on its own - there's no café, no visitor centre, no marked trails that I could find. But if you're staying in the area and fancy a forest walk without driving miles, it does the job. The trees are mature enough to feel proper woodland rather than a commercial plantation, and in autumn the canopy does something worth seeing.

Access details are thin on the ground - no website, no clear opening hours, so treat it as countryside you can walk through rather than a formal attraction with admission fees. Allow a couple of hours if you're making a morning of it, less if you're just after a quick stroll. Best timed for late morning when the light filters through properly. It pairs well with walks around Bosworth or the lakes nearby, so slot it in as part of a larger day rather than a destination on its own.
