Ely Country Park

The Great Ouse River winds through this reserve like it owns the place, and frankly it does. Ely Country Park spreads across woodland and wetland just outside the cathedral city, offering proper walks through native trees with the water never far away. You'll spot kingfishers if you're lucky - locals reckon the best chance is early morning or late afternoon when things are quieter.

It's a straightforward nature reserve rather than a manicured attraction. Paths are decent but muddy after rain, so wellies aren't a bad shout. The reserve feels geared toward anyone who actually wants to walk and watch birds rather than grab an Instagram moment. Families with patient kids do well here; hyperactive toddlers might find the lack of facilities frustrating. Serious birdwatchers and photographers will want to dedicate proper time - two to three hours minimum if you're actually looking rather than just passing through.

From Ely itself it's an easy enough drive or bike ride. If you're staying at Hatters Meadows or Heatherbield Lodge - both just over two miles away - this makes a solid morning or afternoon break from the caravan. The cathedral city itself is worth half a day, and the Fens around here are genuinely worth exploring if you've got time. Combine this with a stroll around Ely's medieval streets and you've got a proper day sorted. Free to access and no set hours means you can turn up whenever suits.
