Embelle Wood

Walking into Embelle Wood feels like stepping into one of those Devon landscapes that doesn't try to shout about itself. This is proper old-school forest - dense canopy, damp earth underfoot, the sort of place where you half expect to stumble on a smuggler's cottage round the next bend. The woodland sits just inland from Lynton, close enough for a half-day venture but far enough to feel genuinely remote.

It's the kind of spot that rewards walkers more than casual strollers. The trees are substantial, the paths wind through without being too obvious, and there's a real sense of the North Devon forest as it actually exists rather than as a postcard. You'll see plenty of birdsong if you go quiet, and the whole thing has that damp, living quality that makes your boots genuinely useful.

Family groups will manage it fine for an hour or so, though small children might find the terrain a bit uneven in places. Serious woodland walkers will probably spend longer, linking it to nearby routes or just sitting still long enough to feel properly away from things. The light filters through in that particular way you only get in British woodland - never quite bright, never quite gloomy.

If you're staying at Lynmouth Holiday Retreat or based near Lynton, this is well worth the short drive. Don't expect facilities or an obvious visitor setup - bring proper footwear and go when it's dry if you can manage it.
