You're here for the birds, frankly. Bitterns, marsh harriers, water rails - the kind of species that demand patience and decent binoculars, which means it works best for keen twitchers and patient families with older kids who can handle the "spot something, wait for ages, spot nothing" rhythm of wildlife watching. The walking is gentle rather than challenging, looping trails through the reserve at your own pace. Spring and autumn migrations are when the excitement peaks; summer can feel a bit quiet unless you're into dragonflies and damselflies, which are genuinely brilliant if you care about them.

There's no cafe or facilities to speak of, so come prepared. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're actually going to see anything worth seeing - rushed visits tend to be disappointing. It's the sort of place that anchors a caravan stay in the area nicely, particularly if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Olive Tree or Waterfront Country Park. Not the main event of a holiday, but the sort of morning that makes you feel like you've done something proper with your time.
