English Heritage - North Elmham Chapel

Stumbling across North Elmham Chapel feels like finding something the tourist board forgot to put on the map. This 11th-century ruin sits quietly in the Norfolk countryside east of Bylaugh, a stubborn reminder of when this was a proper cathedral site. What you're looking at are the flint and stone foundations of a Norman chapel, impressively still standing after nearly a thousand years of Norfolk weather.

It's an English Heritage site, so entry is free and you can wander round at your own pace. The landscape around it is properly atmospheric, especially on a grey afternoon.
