You get proper ancient woodland here - 6,000 acres of it stretching across Essex and into Hertfordshire, with Chingford as your nearest base. It's not one manicured walk but a whole network of paths threading between oak and beech trees that have stood for centuries. The forest floor feels genuinely wild, especially deeper in, and on weekdays you'll barely see another soul.

Walkers will find this absolutely brilliant. There are well-marked trails ranging from gentle riverside strolls to proper woodland hikes, and the variety keeps things fresh. Families with kids do well here too - open spaces for running about, streams to paddle in, and enough room that you won't feel hemmed in by crowds. History types get a genuine kick from knowing you're walking where Londoners have wandered for over a thousand years.

It's free to access and you can spend as little as an hour or lose an entire day depending on your mood and fitness. Early mornings are choice if you want to spot deer. Avoid weekends unless you like company.

Parked at Lee Valley Campsite in Sewardstone, you're barely a 20-minute drive from the forest's better sections - proper convenient. Theobalds Park a bit further out offers a different vibe if you want variety across a holiday week. The forest works best combined with other activities rather than as a full day's draw unless you're a serious walker or just need to breathe properly away from London's grip.
