Ermine Spinney

Ermine Spinney is a proper little woodland patch just east of Peterborough - the sort of place that sneaks up on you when you're exploring the Fens. It's dense, quiet, and genuinely feels separate from the flat farmland surrounding it. Beech and oak dominate the canopy, which is thick enough that even on bright days you're walking in dappled shade. The paths are well-trodden but never crowded, and the whole thing has that meditative quality you get from older woodlands.

This is a walker's wood rather than a sit-down-and-picnic spot. The trails wind through without drama - no dramatic vistas or sudden viewpoints - but that's rather the appeal. You're here for the rhythm of walking, the quiet, and the odd flash of woodland birds. Give yourself an hour to two hours depending on how far you want to penetrate. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after 45 minutes, honestly. History buffs won't find much beyond the ancient woodland itself.

If you're based at Ferry Meadows Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, Ermine Spinney makes a decent half-day outing to break up the flat landscape. It's free to access and open year-round, though autumn when the light gets low and golden is when it really rewards a visit. Winter's fine too if you don't mind muddy boots. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right.
