Just outside Leicester, Everards Meadows is a proper bit of local green space that deserves more footfall than it gets. It's essentially open grassland and woodland - the sort of place where you can actually breathe without a housing estate in sight. Walkers will find decent trails threading through, especially if you're after a quick leg-stretch rather than a full day's hike. Families with kids won't complain either; there's room to run about without worrying about them disappearing into crowds.

What makes it work is its directness. No admission fees, no visitor centre, no gift shop - just land that's genuinely there for walking. The meadow itself opens up nicely, and the edges have enough tree cover to make it feel less exposed than some country parks. Worth allowing a good couple of hours if you're doing the full loop, though you can knock it down to forty minutes if you're just after some air.
