Fairoak Pools

The water at Fairoak Pools sits unnervingly still, almost black in certain light, ringed by dense woodland that feels properly remote despite being just outside Rugeley. This is a working gravel extraction site turned fishing and wildlife spot - not a manicured leisure lake, but something altogether wilder.

What you're looking at is a series of interconnected pools created decades ago when the gravel was excavated. The banks are uneven, overgrown in places, and the whole thing attracts serious anglers alongside birdwatchers who know what they're after. There's little in the way of facilities - this isn't a destination with a cafe or visitor centre. It's the sort of place where you show up, walk the perimeter if you fancy it, and either get it or you don't.

Families with small children might find it underwhelming unless they're genuinely interested in wildlife spotting. The pools themselves don't offer swimming or paddling - you're here to observe, mainly. That said, walkers will appreciate the woodland paths, and if you're into photography or birding, you could easily spend a couple of hours picking out herons, cormorants, and whatever else is nesting that season.

Stay at one of the nearby holiday parks - Chase Glamping Pods, Silver Trees, or Chase Camping at Four Oaks Farm are all within a ten-minute drive - and you've got a decent stretch of countryside on your doorstep. It works best as a morning walk combined with exploring Rugeley's market heritage rather than as a standalone attraction.
