Falconer's Hut

The walk up to Falconer's Hut rewards you with one of those views that makes you stop complaining about the Scottish wind. This simple stone bothy sits high in the Highland landscape near Dornoch, a proper working walker's shelter rather than a museum piece. You're looking at a functional reminder of how folk survived in this terrain - basic, honest, and utterly honest about the harshness of living this far north.

It's not a destination you'd spend hours at. You walk there, you poke your head inside, you absorb the geography and the silence, and you move on. Thirty minutes to an hour covers it comfortably. Hikers and history types will find it worthwhile - the kind of place that reads like a diary entry from another era. Families with young children might find the trek itself more interesting than the hut itself, depending on legs and patience.

Free to visit, obviously. No facilities, no interpretation boards, no visitor centre nonsense. Just access to the landscape. The nearest decent base is Dornoch itself, though if you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Grannie's Heilan' Hame Holiday Park over in Sutherland, you're close enough for a morning or afternoon excursion. The walk in can be boggy depending on season and weather - proper Highland terrain, not a manicured trail.

Go in decent weather if you can. The views across Sutherland justify the effort, and frankly, sitting in a bothy in rain isn't the experience you're after.
