Falls of Dochart

The Dochart thunders over a series of rocky shelves right in the heart of Killin, making this one of those rare waterfall experiences where you don't need to trek for hours to see something genuinely spectacular. White water crashes down in stages, and on a decent day the spray creates rainbows that catch the light properly.

It's a short walk from the village centre - five minutes at most - which means families with small kids won't grind to a halt halfway there. The viewing spots are accessible and well-trodden, with a bridge that gives you a proper vantage point over the falls. In spate after heavy rain, it's genuinely impressive; in summer when the water's low, it's pleasant rather than jaw-dropping, but still worth the detour.

Walkers heading into the Tay Valley will pass through here anyway. Historians will note the strategic crossing point and the old mill sites that benefited from the water power. It's free to visit, no gates, no barriers - just a natural feature that's been drawing people for centuries.

If you're based at Loch Tay Highland Lodges just up the road, this makes an easy evening stroll before dinner. Allow fifteen minutes to stand about and take photos, thirty if you want to explore both sides of the river. The village itself has cafes and a reasonable pub, so you can build it into something longer if the weather's playing ball.
