Fermyn Woods

Walking into Fermyn Woods feels like stepping back into something wild and proper untamed. This ancient forest spreads across Northamptonshire with dense woodland trails that wind between towering oaks and thick undergrowth - the kind of place where you can actually lose yourself for a few hours without bumping into the crowds you'd find at more famous nature reserves.

It's excellent for serious walkers and families who don't mind a bit of mud. The paths vary in difficulty, so you can either potter about on the easier routes near the edges or push deeper in if you've got the energy. Birdwatchers will find it rewarding too - the woodland supports a decent range of species, and the sheer scale of the forest means you've got a real chance of spotting something interesting. Allow at least two hours to do it justice, though you could easily spend half a day here if you're keen.

The nearest town is Peterborough, which helps with provisions, but the real appeal is how well it sits alongside a forest holiday in the area. Both Brightside Caravan Park and New Lodge Farm Bulwick sit within striking distance, making this an ideal base for a few nights of serious woodland exploring. Spring and autumn are best - you'll avoid the summer crowds and get better visibility through the trees. There's no charge to walk here, which makes it a proper cost-effective option when you're caravan-camping nearby.
