Ffridd Newydd

The walk up to Ffridd Newydd from Dolgellau is straightforward but it takes proper effort - you're looking at a decent climb through moorland with views that only get better the higher you go. The peak itself isn't dramatic in the way some Welsh summits are, but that's rather the point. You get genuine solitude up here, which feels rare these days.

The views across the Cader Idris range are what make it worthwhile. On a clear day you can see for miles across Snowdonia, and the landscape has that raw, windswept quality that defines this part of North Wales. It's not a technical scramble - more a straightforward hill walk - so families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the moorland stretch a bit tedious. Allow two to three hours there and back depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top.

This works well as part of a wider exploring trip from the Dolgellau area. Torrent Walk Campsite and Bunkhouse sits just 3.9 miles away and offers proper facilities if you want to base yourself nearby. Llwyn yr Helm, slightly further out, has earned a full 5.0 rating for good reason. Either would be a solid choice for a week combining fell walking with the quieter side of Snowdonia.

The real appeal here is the lack of fuss. No visitor centre, no café, no crowds. Just a hill and the views. Go when the weather's settled - the wind can be fierce - and you'll understand why people keep coming back.
