Findon Waterfall

The walk to Findon Waterfall rewards you with something genuinely worth the effort - a proper cascade that drops into a dark pool surrounded by ancient woodland. You'll find it near Dingwall in the Highlands, and it's the sort of place that feels properly remote even though it's barely a few miles from civilisation.

Getting there means a decent hike through mixed forest. The path can be muddy and uneven, so proper boots are essential rather than optional. Most people allow between 45 minutes to an hour each way, depending on fitness and how many photos you want to take. The waterfall itself is most impressive after heavy rain - visit in summer drought and it becomes a trickle, which is disappointing given the trek.

This works brilliantly for walkers and anyone after a bit of wild Highland scenery. Families with older kids (say, eight and up) will manage fine if they're used to moorland walks. Younger ones might struggle with the terrain and the distance. History buffs won't find much here - it's purely about the landscape.

If you're camping at Dingwall Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Blackrock Caravan Park, the waterfall makes a natural half-day outing. Both sites are within easy driving distance. The walk itself is free, naturally, and there's nowhere to buy refreshments nearby so bring water.

Worth the detour if you're already in the area and the weather's decent. Don't make it your sole reason for visiting Dingwall, but it slots in nicely alongside other Highland pursuits.
