Fishguard Fort

The fort sits on a headland overlooking Fishguard Bay, a squat Victorian military stronghold that most visitors drive straight past. Built in the 1880s as coastal defence, it's still standing - though not always open to the public, which is frustrating if you've made the trip. When access is available, you get the chance to wander around the gun emplacements and peer out at the same views the soldiers would have watched. It's more atmospheric than thrilling, honestly. The real appeal is the location itself: perched above the harbour with the sweep of the bay stretching out, it's a decent spot for photographs if the weather cooperates.

Historians and military buffs will find it worth half an hour. Everyone else should manage expectations - it won't keep kids entertained for long, and there's not much by way of interpretation on site. Check ahead before visiting, as opening hours are irregular. The walk up from Fishguard town centre takes about fifteen minutes, which beats paying for parking.
