Five Gates Wood

You'll find yourself walking under a cathedral of tall pines and birches the moment you step into Five Gates Wood near Lingfield. It's one of those Sussex forests that feels properly wild without requiring a serious trek - woodland that's actually walkable, which is rarer than you'd think around here.

The wood gets its name from five historic gates that once marked boundaries across the land, though these days you're more likely to notice the network of well-maintained paths cutting through dense forest floor. Walkers will appreciate the peace of it. No crowds, no visitor centre blare, just the sound of your boots on damp earth and the occasional bird call. It's the sort of place where a couple of hours disappears without you noticing.

Families with primary-school-age kids will find it decent enough for a morning walk - nothing too demanding, and there's enough space to let them run ahead without losing sight of them. Teenagers might find it a bit lacking without more dramatic scenery or a destination point to aim for. The forest works best in autumn when the light filters through the canopy properly, or after rain when everything smells incredible.

If you're basing yourself at Hook Farm Campsite or Worth Forest Glamping - both excellent spots - Five Gates Wood slots in nicely as a morning walk before heading elsewhere. It's free to access and there's no formal opening hours to worry about. Allow 90 minutes to two hours depending on how you wander. Worth a detour if you're in the area, though not worth driving an hour out of your way for.
