Flag Fen Museum

Flag Fen sits on the edge of Peterborough, a sprawl of Bronze Age archaeology that would've been underwater four thousand years ago. You're walking through a preserved settlement - actual post holes where Iron Age people built their homes, wooden platforms unearthed from the peat. It's genuinely unusual, this wet site stuff, because normally wood just rots away. Here it didn't.

The museum building itself is modest, all low ceilings and display cases that let you get properly close to the finds - flint tools, pottery shards, jewellery that feels impossibly delicate. But the real draw is outside. The reconstructed Bronze Age buildings give you a sense of scale and space that photos can't touch. Kids will sprint around them, though if you've got teenagers less interested in ancient history, they'll likely be done in ninety minutes.

Walkers and amateur archaeologists will find far more to chew on - the site's sprawling enough that you can actually spend a decent afternoon here if the weather's decent. The flat Cambridgeshire landscape rolling out isn't exactly dramatic, but there's something compelling about standing where people genuinely stood half a world ago.

It's positioned brilliantly if you're camping at Ferry Meadows, just five miles away - far enough that it doesn't feel like you're doing tourist attractions in a loop, close enough that it's a sensible morning or afternoon visit. Worth building into a broader Peterborough trip rather than making a special journey on its own, though.
