Foel Dyrch

The walk up Foel Dyrch from Whitland is one of those climbs that looks modest on the map but delivers proper views once you've earned them. At 1,220 feet, it's not going to knacker you, though the final push gets steep enough to make you feel like you've actually done something.

The summit itself is fairly bare - moorland grass and gorse mostly - but the panorama spreads out across Carmarthenshire in a way that makes the effort worthwhile. On a clear day you can pick out the Black Mountains to the north and glimpses of the Preseli hills beyond. The peak works best for walkers rather than casual strollers; it's the kind of place you go to for the walk itself, not just to stand about taking photos.

Allow a good two hours from Whitland for the round trip if you're moderate pace. There's a decent path most of the way, though it gets boggy in places after rain. The climb is steady rather than technical, so families with older children manage it fine, though younger ones might grumble on the way down.

Staying at one of the nearby parks - Frowen Fields or Llandissilio are both excellent - gives you a proper base for exploring the area's walking routes. Foel Dyrch isn't the most dramatic peak in Wales, but it's genuine and unmanicured, the sort of hill locals actually use rather than one that exists purely for tourists.
