Foel Lwyd

Three hours up and two hours down - that's what you're looking at for this proper little mountain just inland from Penmaenmawr. Foel Lwyd might not be Wales's most famous peak, but it delivers views that'll make your Instagram followers properly jealous. The summit sits at 465 metres, giving you sweeping panoramas across Conwy Bay and the Menai Strait on a clear day.

Walkers with decent fitness will love the challenge, though families with young children might find it a bit much. The path starts steep and stays that way for most of the climb. No fancy visitor centre or marked trails here - just old-fashioned fell walking that rewards effort with solitude. You'll likely have the summit to yourself, which is more than you can say for Snowdon.

Pack proper walking boots and waterproofs. The weather changes quickly up here, and the rocky terrain near the top can be slippery when wet. Allow the full day if you're making it part of a coastal walking holiday - you'll want time to recover afterwards. The nearby holiday parks like Craiglwyd Hall Caravan Park and Cefn Cae Campsite make decent bases, putting you within easy reach of both the mountain and Penmaenmawr's seafront for a post-climb pint.
