Foel Meyllteyrn

A fairly modest hill by Welsh standards, Foel Meyllteyrn rises to 564 metres and sits just inland from Pwllheli on the Llŷn Peninsula. The walk up takes the better part of an hour depending on your fitness and which route you choose, but rewards you with proper views across Cardigan Bay and back towards Snowdonia on a clear day.

It's the sort of peak that works well for families who want a genuine hill walk without committing to the serious stuff further east. Children aged eight upwards will manage it fine, though younger ones might find it a slog. The terrain is moorland and grass - nothing technical, just relentless and occasionally boggy when wet.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the summit itself, so bring water and something to eat. The walk is free, of course. Best done in summer when the days are long and the cloud base higher - I've been caught out here in winter weather that rolls in fast off the sea.

If you're staying at one of the local glamping spots near Pwllheli - Tyn Ddol or Glampio Coed are both close - this makes an excellent morning out before heading down to the coast for lunch. It's not a bucket-list peak, but it's a solid half-day that beats another trip round the arcades in Pwllheli. The real appeal is the solitude. You won't fight crowds up here.
