Foel Offrwm Hillfort

Climb up to Foel Offrwm and you're standing inside the ramparts of an Iron Age hillfort that's been holding this ridge above Dolgellau for roughly 2,500 years. The earthworks are still remarkably visible - concentric ditches and banks that would have been formidable when they were freshly dug, even if they're now grass-covered and softened by time.

It's a proper walk to get up there from the town, but the effort pays off. You get sweeping views across the Cader Idris range and down into the valleys below. On a clear day it's the sort of spot where you understand why someone chose to build a defensive settlement here. The site itself is open and unfenced - you're free to wander the ramparts and try to picture what life was like when these were working fortifications.

This is one for walkers and archaeology enthusiasts rather than families after a quick half-hour outing. You'll want at least two hours to get up, explore properly, and come back down. It's free to access and there's no visitor infrastructure, so bring water and decent footwear. The ground can be boggy in patches.

Staying at either Llwyn yr Helm or Torrent Walk puts you well-positioned for this walk. Both are close enough to Dolgellau that you can use the town as your base and tackle the hillfort as a day trip. It works particularly well alongside other walks in the area - you're in serious walking country here.
