Foreland Wood

Foreland Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Hythe, the kind of place you slip into without fanfare and come out wondering why you didn't know about it sooner. Ancient trees, dense enough that you lose the sky for stretches, with paths that fork and meander rather than march you through in a loop. The undergrowth changes with the seasons - bluebells in spring, then bracken and moss-covered logs that smell of earth and damp.

It's a walker's wood rather than a family picnic spot, though kids who can manage an hour without a playground won't complain. You get genuine quiet here, the kind where you actually hear birds. The canopy does most of the work - it's sheltered enough even in drizzle, dark enough that you feel like you've genuinely gone somewhere, not just wandered round the park.

Allow an hour for a decent mooch about, longer if you're taking it slowly. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I could find, so bring what you need. Spring's the best time - drier underfoot and the light filters through differently.

If you're basing yourself at Port Lympne Safari Park down the road, this makes a solid half-day complement. You get wildlife at the park, solitude in the wood. Dunn Street Farm Campsite users could do worse for a morning walk either, though you'll want proper boots rather than trainers.
