Foremark Reservoir

The water at Foremark stretches out like something someone actually bothered to build properly, which - spoiler - they did. This reservoir sits just south of Derby and serves as the kind of place where you can walk the perimeter without your legs falling off, spot a decent variety of birds, and actually feel like you've done something on a day out rather than just drunk overpriced coffee.

It's a working water supply, so don't expect theme park energy. What you get instead is a proper walking circuit with decent sightlines across the water, patches of woodland, and enough open space that kids won't be climbing the walls after twenty minutes. The birdwatching here is genuinely worth the trip if you've got binoculars - waterfowl congregate in numbers through autumn and winter, and the resident population keeps things interesting year-round.

The walk takes roughly ninety minutes to two hours depending on your pace and how often you stop to actually look at things. Free to access, which is the way it should be. Spring and early autumn are lovely, though winter brings the bigger bird populations. Families do well here; it's active without being exhausting.

If you're staying at Broadleaves Glamping just up the road, this is genuinely worth factoring in. It won't dominate your day, but paired with a walk around Calke Abbey or a mooch through Derby town centre, it slots in nicely. Closer still to Field of Dreams if you want something low-key after arrival.
