Fovant Badge (WW1 Map of Australia)

Carved into a chalk hillside near Salisbury, the Fovant Badge is an enormous map of Australia rendered in white lines - a remnant from when Australian soldiers camped here during the First World War. It's genuinely strange to come across, particularly if you're driving through the Chalke Valley without warning. The badge sits on downland that's open to the public, so you can walk right up to it and see the outline of the continent properly.

What makes it properly worth the detour is the sheer audacity of the thing. During the war, Australian troops stationed at nearby camps carved their regimental badges into the hillside - this one took a whole unit and lasted because of the chalk underneath. Standing at ground level, you can't make sense of it, which is part of the charm. The best view is from the road or from a distance along the footpath.

History buffs will want to spend 20 minutes here, though honestly you don't need much longer.
