Fowey Harbour

The real draw of Fowey Harbour isn't the marina itself - it's what happens around it. You get a proper working port where fishing boats still land their catch, sail boats bob about, and the whole thing feels genuinely alive rather than polished for tourists. The water's that deep blue-green that makes you understand why people moved here centuries ago, and the light bounces off it in ways that explain why artists won't leave.

Walk along the quay and you'll see the boats properly - not from some safe viewing platform, but close enough to smell the salt and hear the ropes creaking. It's free to wander, which means you can spend twenty minutes or two hours depending on whether you've got coffee and time on your hands. The town of Polruan's right there across the water, accessible by ferry if you fancy it, and the whole setup makes sense once you clock how sheltered the harbour is.

This suits walkers and photographers more than families with young children - there's no playground energy here, just genuine maritime activity. Come early morning when the light's best and the fishing boats are actually doing something, rather than mid-afternoon when it's mostly tourists peering at yachts. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Tremeer Farm or East Crinnis, Fowey makes an excellent morning before heading inland. Worth the drive, definitely. Not worth making it your whole day, but as part of a coastal wander through mid-Cornwall, it's the real thing.
