Foxholes Hill Plantation

The woodland at Foxholes Hill isn't going to stop traffic on the way to the coast, but if you're based at one of the nearby glamping sites - Yorkshire Wolds Glamping is barely three miles away - it's a solid afternoon option. The plantation is what it says: coniferous forest covering the slopes, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think after a morning in Malton.

What you're doing here is walking. The paths wind through the trees without much fanfare, and there's a gentle gradient that won't knacker anyone unfit. On a damp day it smells properly green. The views aren't dramatic - you're too low and surrounded by conifers for that - but the quietness has its own appeal. Kids under ten might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes; teenagers with phones won't notice the time at all.

Go in autumn when the light filters through differently, or spring when everything's softer. Summer can feel a bit claustrophobic in there. Allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on how far you want to ramble. There's no visitor infrastructure that I could find - no cafe, no car park signage - so come prepared with decent shoes and maybe a packed lunch if you're planning a proper stint.

It pairs well with the other walks in the Wolds, and it's close enough to Thorpe Hall or Humble Bee Farm that you can combine it with their facilities. Not a destination on its own, but a proper little addition to a park-based break.
