Foxton Inclined Plane lower arm

The lower arm of Foxton Inclined Plane is essentially a massive water basin - the sort of engineering oddity that makes you stop and actually think about how the Victorians solved problems. It's part of the old canal transport system, and what you're looking at is the lower holding tank where narrowboats were once winched up or down the slope. From Leicester, it's a straightforward drive into Northamptonshire, and frankly, it's worth combining with a walk along the Foxton Locks themselves, which sit just alongside.

You can stand right at the water's edge and take in the scale of it. There's something hypnotic about the engineering - all those brick walls and the mechanical logic of how boats were shifted vertically. It's free to access and you can spend as little as twenty minutes having a poke around, or if you're the sort who gets animated by industrial heritage, you could easily stretch it to an hour or more with the locks.

Families with older kids will find it more interesting than toddlers - there's not much to do beyond look and walk - but it's a solid stop between Leicester and the nearby parks like Valley View Escapes or Brook Meadow. Walkers particularly should come. The whole area around Foxton is proper canal country, flat terrain perfect for a morning ramble. Go when the light's decent; that's when the brickwork photographs well and the water catches the sun properly.
