Fradley Junction

The canal junction at Fradley sits quietly between Burton-on-Trent and Lichfield, where the Coventry Canal meets the Trent and Mersey. It's genuinely one of those places where you feel the pull of industrial England even now. The lock keeper's cottage still stands, and watching narrowboats manoeuvre through the junction tells you everything about why this spot mattered - and still does.

There's not much to do here in the theme-park sense. What you get instead is a proper walk along the towpath, the chance to watch boats coming and going, maybe a pint at the canalside pub if you time it right. Kids find the locks interesting for about twenty minutes, then want to move on - but families staying at Kingfisher Holiday Park, just a tenth of a mile away, can easily pop down and back without feeling they've wasted the journey.

The real appeal is for walkers and canal enthusiasts who understand that industrial heritage isn't about grand displays. It's about the engineering that moved the country. The junction feels lived-in, ungussied-up. You'll see working boaters here, not actors in costume. Free to visit, obviously - it's just a junction on a public towpath.

Go on a weekday morning if you want peace. Weekends bring narrowboat clusters and families doing the walk, which is fine but less atmospheric. A thirty-minute visit is realistic unless you're genuinely into canal mechanics or planning a longer towpath ramble toward Lichfield.
