Frew's Plantation

Walk into Frew's Plantation and you're immediately swallowed by proper woodland - the kind where the canopy closes overhead and you lose track of the noise from Antrim. This is a working forest rather than a manicured attraction, which means it feels honest. The paths wind through mixed woodland, mostly evergreens with some deciduous trees thrown in, and the whole place has that soft, damp ground feeling you get in Irish forests after rain.

It's worth a solid hour or two if you're keen on a proper walk, though you could stretch it to half a day if you explore all the tracks. The terrain is generally manageable - nothing dramatic - so families with older kids and regular walkers will get the most from it. Younger children might find it a bit samey after a while, unless they're the type who enjoy just mucking about in the woods.

The real advantage is location. Based near Antrim town, it's close enough to make sense if you're already in the area, and it works perfectly as a morning or afternoon excursion from either Lough Beg Glamping or Sett on The Lough - both excellent spots for a proper rural stay. Either one puts you within half an hour's drive.

Bring wellies. The ground stays wet regardless of whether it's been raining, and there's not much shelter if the weather turns. Go on a weekday morning if you can - you'll likely have the place to yourself, which is when a forest like this genuinely feels like something.
