Froggersgill Wood

You'll find yourself in proper woodland as soon as you enter Froggersgill Wood, just outside Leyburn in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. It's the kind of place that feels deliberately quiet - tall trees, dappled light, and paths that meander through beech and oak without much fanfare or signposting.

The wood itself isn't massive, but it's well worth an hour's wander if you're staying nearby. There are decent walking trails threading through, and in autumn the colour is genuinely striking. Spring's equally good when the woodland floor comes alive with bluebells and wild garlic. You'll spot the occasional stone wall or old boundary markers that remind you people have worked this land for centuries, though it doesn't bash you over the head with history.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit limited - there's no visitor centre, play equipment, or facilities to speak of. Serious walkers and woodland enthusiasts will get far more from it. If you're staying at Eastfield Glamping Farm nearby, it's close enough for a proper leg-stretch without needing to drive anywhere. Equally, it pairs well with a broader Dales exploration - you could combine it with bigger attractions in the area rather than making it your entire day out.

Free access, no visitor facilities to worry about, and you can arrive whenever suits you. Allow 45 minutes to an hour depending on how slowly you want to move. Go when it's not been raining for a week unless you fancy muddy boots.
