Frostlane Copse

Walking into Frostlane Copse feels like stepping back several centuries. This ancient woodland sits just outside Southampton and hasn't changed much since the medieval period - proper old-growth forest, the sort where you half-expect to bump into a forester from 1400. The trees are substantial. Oaks, mostly, with beeches thrown in, and the canopy's thick enough that even on grey Hampshire days it feels atmospheric rather than dreary.

You're here for the walk, really. There's no visitor centre, no café, no interpretive boards - which is rather refreshing. Just paths winding through dense woodland, lots of moss, plenty of fungi in autumn, and the occasional bit of ancient woodland management you can spot if you know what you're looking for. It'll take you anywhere from half an hour to two hours depending on which route you fancy and how slowly you're moving. The ground can be boggy after rain, so boots matter.

History types will appreciate this - it's genuinely old woodland, the sort that's been continuous forest cover for centuries. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after an hour unless they're proper nature enthusiasts. It's brilliant for walkers and anyone keen on woodland ecology, but there's nothing to actually do here beyond walking and looking.

It's free and accessible year-round, though spring wildflowers and autumn colours are your best bets for timing. If you're staying at Lepe Beach Campsite down the road, this makes an excellent morning outing before heading to the coast.
