Gallops Plantation

Walk into Gallops Plantation and you're immediately swallowed by proper woodland - the kind of forest that feels properly removed from East Yorkshire's otherwise flat landscape. It's a genuine working plantation rather than some manicured country estate, which means you get real trees, decent paths, and the sort of peace you don't find near Beverley's market square.

The trails wind through mixed woodland with enough variation to keep things interesting. You'll find yourself under tall conifers one minute, then through deciduous sections the next. It's free to access, which is why locals guard this place like a secret. Allow a couple of hours if you want to do the main loops properly, though you can dart through in thirty minutes if you're pressed.

Walkers will love it. The terrain's gentle enough for families who don't fancy anything too demanding, but there's real woodland atmosphere rather than flat park walks. Kids won't get bored if they're the type who enjoy spotting wildlife and scrambling over fallen logs. Photographers should come on a dry day when light filters through the canopy properly.

If you're based at Cherry Burton Leisure Park or Butt Farm just down the road, this makes a brilliant half-day outing. William's Den is further out but still within easy reach. The plantation works perfectly as a walking break between visiting Beverley itself and exploring the broader Yorkshire countryside.
