Gallow Hillock Stone

Standing on a hillside near Banchory, this Bronze Age stone circle commands the kind of quiet dignity that makes you wonder why it's not better known. Gallow Hillock Stone is what remains of an ancient ceremonial site - a single standing stone, weathered and substantial, that's been here for roughly 4,000 years. The setting matters as much as the stone itself. Views across Aberdeenshire unfold from up here, and you get that proper sense of scale - realising that someone in the Neolithic thought this particular spot was important enough to haul stone and gather people around it.

It's the sort of place that appeals to anyone interested in prehistory or Bronze Age ritual, but equally it works for walkers who want something with a bit of historical substance rather than just a random viewpoint. You don't need more than 20 minutes here unless you're really into archaeological detail, but the walk to reach it rewards you with better views than you'd expect from Aberdeenshire.

If you're staying at Banchory Lodge or Silverbank (both rated excellently) you're well within striking distance. The site slots neatly into a wider loop exploring Deeside's Bronze Age monuments, and it beats spending another afternoon in Banchory town itself. Best visited on a clear day when the light is worth the bother of getting there.
