Gallowhill Wood

The woodland paths through Gallowhill Wood feel properly remote, even though you're only a few miles from Inverness. It's the sort of place where you can lose an afternoon without trying - tall pines, decent walking trails, and the kind of quiet that makes city ears ring a bit at first.

What you get here is straightforward: footpaths winding through native woodland, plenty of space to stretch your legs, and if you're lucky with the weather, decent views across the surrounding countryside. The wood itself isn't dramatic - no rushing streams or clifftop vistas - but that's rather the point. It's walking for the sake of walking, which some people find genuinely peaceful and others find a touch dull after an hour. Families with younger kids will get decent mileage out of it; the paths are manageable and there's room for them to burn off energy without danger.

Go early if you can, especially at weekends. The car park fills up with locals using it as a quick escape from town. Allow two to three hours if you're genuinely exploring the full network of paths; thirty minutes will satisfy you if you just want a leg-stretch.

It slots nicely into a Highland park holiday - park yourself at Dingwall Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Beauly Holiday Park, both within ten minutes' drive, and use Gallowhill as a reliable backup when weather rules out bigger, more exposed walks. It's the kind of place that reminds you that not every forest needs to be famous to be worth visiting.
