Gallows Field

The walk into Gallows Field near Saxmundham is deceptively good. You'd expect a nature reserve with such a grim name to feel a bit bleak, but it's actually rather lovely - open grassland with patches of woodland, proper birding territory if you know what to look for.

It's the kind of place that rewards patience. Bring binoculars and a decent bird guide, and you'll spot warblers, woodpeckers, and if you're lucky, some rarer migrants in spring and autumn. The habitat is mixed - wet grassland alongside drier scrub - which means the wildlife list is genuinely impressive for Suffolk. In summer the wildflowers take over and it's considerably less sinister than the name suggests.

Walkers will appreciate the quiet. It's not a dramatic landscape - no hills, no dramatic vistas - but it's absorbing in a understated way. A couple of hours is about right unless you're really into bird watching, in which case you could easily spend half a day. There are no facilities, so bring water and wear decent boots when it's been wet.

If you're staying at Cliff House Holiday Park just down the road, this is an easy add-on for a morning walk. Beach View is further out but still accessible if you fancy mixing your coast time with some inland exploring. It's the sort of place that won't wow everyone, but anyone with even casual interest in wildlife will find their time well spent.
