Gallows Hill

Historically minded visitors will find it worthwhile. Walkers exploring the Dumfries area can easily include it in a route - it's accessible from the town and doesn't demand hours of your time. Families with younger children might find it a bit bleak and abstract without a proper interpretation on site, though teenagers studying Scottish history could get something from it. The views across Dumfries aren't spectacular, which adds to the rather stark atmosphere of the place.

It's free to visit and there's no set opening times - you can approach it whenever you like. Allow maybe thirty minutes if you're making a specific trip, though it works better as a stop along a longer walk. The nearby Halleaths Caravan Park is barely a mile away, making it simple to build into a Dumfries & Galloway holiday. If you're already in the area visiting other sites, it's worth the detour. On its own though, it's more historical pilgrimage than day out.
