The walk through Ganwick Wood, just outside Newmarket, is proper quiet - the kind of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's a modest woodland, nothing dramatic, but exactly what you want if you're after some green air without the crowds. The paths are straightforward enough, threading through native trees with decent light filtering through the canopy most of the year. You're looking at maybe an hour if you meander, less if you're just after a quick leg-stretch.

Walkers and dog owners gravitate here naturally. It's the sort of spot where you'll see a handful of locals with spaniels, not tour groups. Families with younger kids will manage fine on the main paths, though there's not much to keep them entertained beyond climbing trees and spotting the odd pheasant. If you're staying at Piggles Retreat nearby, it makes a gentle addition to your day - close enough that you won't waste petrol getting there, far enough removed from the holiday park to feel like proper countryside.

Access appears free and unrestricted, though there's no obvious visitor infrastructure - no café, no signage, no facilities. Go when the ground isn't waterlogged, really. Winter mud here is the sticky sort. It's not a destination in itself, to be honest, but it's the kind of local woodland that adds texture to a Cambridgeshire break. Worth the diversion if you're in Newmarket anyway.
