Garreg Lwyd

The walk up Garreg Lwyd rewards you with proper panoramic views across the Carmarthenshire landscape - if you're willing to earn them. This isn't a casual stroll from the car park; it's a genuine hill walk that takes the better part of an afternoon, depending on fitness and the route you choose from Llangadog.

The peak itself is fairly bare and windswept, which means the views aren't obscured by trees. On a clear day you can pick out the wider countryside rolling away in all directions. The ascent is steady rather than brutal, though the terrain underfoot can be boggy in places, so proper walking boots are non-negotiable.

This is one for walkers rather than casual visitors. Kids aged ten and up will manage it fine if they're used to hills, but younger children might find the slog tedious without the reward of a dramatic summit. Once you're up there, you'll want a good twenty minutes to properly take in the view and catch your breath.

Timing matters here - get there early to avoid the afternoon mist rolling in. Spring and summer are best, though autumn can be stunning if you pick a dry day. Allow three to four hours for the whole outing.

If you're camping at Cosmos Camping nearby, it's a natural day-out option. Llandyfan and Gelli are slightly further afield, but still within reasonable striking distance for a morning walk.
