Tucked away in this proper little Lancashire town between Preston and the Forest of Bowland, it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for, though you absolutely should plan for it if contemporary work is your thing.

The gallery itself focuses on original paintings and contemporary art from local and regional artists. What you get is a genuine feel for what's being made in the North West right now, not the usual tourist-trap reproductions. The space is intimate enough that you won't need hours here - an hour browsing is plenty, though if you're particular about art you might linger longer over pieces that catch your eye.

It works brilliantly as a half-day stop if you're basing yourselves at one of the nearby caravan parks - Gibsons Barn or Claylands are both within a couple of miles. Garstang itself is walkable and has decent cafes, so you can make a proper morning of it without feeling rushed. This isn't a family entertainment destination, mind you. Kids will get bored unless they're genuinely interested in art, but for couples or serious collectors, it's worth the detour from Preston.

The admission situation isn't entirely clear either, but galleries of this size are usually free or charge a small voluntary donation. Worth checking before you visit, really.
