Garth Hill

The walk up Garth Hill takes you out of Llanidloes and into proper Mid Wales countryside - moorland and forestry tracks that feel genuinely remote despite being barely a mile from town. It's not a long slog, but the climb is steady enough that you'll feel it in your legs. The summit's nothing fancy - there's a trig point and a stone shelter - but on a clear day you get views across the Clywedog valley that make the effort worthwhile. On a damp afternoon, which is most afternoons round here, you're more likely to be wrapped in cloud.

This is walker terrain. Families with young children might find it a bit much unless the kids are already used to proper hills. The real appeal is for people who want a proper walk without committing half a day - you can be up and down in two hours, which fits nicely with a caravan holiday at one of the local parks like Red Kite Touring or Dol-Llys Farm. It's the sort of thing you do between breakfast and lunch before the weather turns.

Bring a waterproof. Honestly. The path can be boggy, especially after rain, and there's not much shelter once you leave the trees. The stone shelter at the top is barely wide enough for four people standing up. Free to access, no permits, no complications - just head out early and don't expect much in the way of facilities. It's a solid local walk that rewards being close by, not a destination in itself.
