Gibson Mill

Gibson Mill sits in a proper slice of Calderdale history - a working textile mill that's been converted into a museum where you can actually see how the place functioned rather than just read about it behind glass. The mill itself is the attraction; water-powered looms, the engineering that kept the textile trade going, and genuine artefacts from the industrial boom that made this valley matter. You'll spend a couple of hours here if you're genuinely interested in how things were made. Families with older kids will get more from it than toddlers - there's hands-on stuff, but it's not a soft play centre.

It's free entry, which is grand. The real draw is understanding why Hebden Bridge became what it is. Without mills like this, the town wouldn't exist. The setting's brilliant too - right in the valley with the riverside walks starting basically on the doorstep.

If you're camping at Old Chamber, just 2.4 miles away, Gibson Mill makes an easy half-day stop when the weather turns. Hebden Bridge Caravan and Motorhome Club is only 3.8 miles further, so both are genuinely close for a morning visit. The Pennine Way walkers pass nearby, and it breaks up a hiking holiday nicely.

Go on a weekday if you can - weekends draw the local school groups and it gets a bit thin on conversation space. The mill itself tells you more than any guide could anyway.
