Giles's Copse

Walking through this small woodland near Highbridge feels like stepping into a proper old English forest. Ancient oaks and beech trees create a canopy overhead, while brambles and ferns carpet the forest floor. The paths aren't marked particularly well, which adds to the sense of exploration but might frustrate families with young children.

Dog walkers seem to know this place well - you'll spot plenty of locals exercising their mutts along the informal trails. The copse isn't huge, so don't expect an all-day adventure. An hour of gentle wandering will cover most of it, though you could easily spend longer if you're the type to stop and identify every bird call.

Families staying at nearby holiday parks like Haven Burnham-on-Sea or Sandy Glade will find this a nice break from beach activities. Kids who enjoy building dens or collecting leaves will have a field day, but those expecting marked trails or visitor facilities might be disappointed. It's properly wild woodland - no café, no toilets, no interpretation boards.

Best visited on a dry day when the paths aren't muddy. The trees provide decent shelter if you get caught in a shower, but waterproof boots are sensible year-round. A lovely spot for a quiet walk when the coastal resorts feel too busy.
