Gillerd's Rough

The woodland around Gillerd's Rough offers a proper escape from Stafford's town centre without requiring a long drive. It's a genuine forest walk rather than a manicured visitor attraction - the kind of place where you'll find yourself on unmarked paths thick with leaf litter and the occasional muddy patch that catches you unaware.

The area works best for walkers who don't need way-marked trails or interpretation boards. Bring decent boots and an OS map, or a phone with offline mapping downloaded. Families with younger kids might find it a bit sparse for keeping attention - there's no playground, cafe or facilities that I could see. But if your lot enjoys proper woodland exploring and spotting woodland birds, they'll get a couple of hours out of it easily enough.

It's free to access and open year-round, though autumn and spring are when it feels most rewarding. Winter walks are atmospheric but muddy. Summer gets a bit thick with undergrowth and flies.

Staying at one of the nearby parks like Poppy Fields Glamping or Lane Tree Hideaways puts you within striking distance for a morning woodland wander before heading into Stafford itself for lunch. Pair it with a walk around Cannock Chase if you want a fuller day out - it's only twenty minutes or so further on. On its own, allow two to three hours max. It's not a destination in itself, but a solid addition to a Staffordshire park holiday.
