Gipping Great Wood

The woodland around the River Gipping, just east of Ipswich, is proper walking country. Gipping Great Wood offers a decent stretch of forest paths where you can actually lose the sound of the town - which, given how close you are to Suffolk's county town, is something of a minor miracle.

It's not dramatic stuff. No dramatic gorges or waterfall moments. What you get instead is a straightforward walk through mature woodland with the river running alongside in places, which locals seem to rate more highly than guidebooks suggest. The paths are well-trodden and manageable, though they can get muddy after rain - bring decent boots rather than trainers.

Walkers will find the most value here. It's the sort of place where you spend an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're dawdling, then head back to base. Families with young kids might find it a touch dull after thirty minutes unless they're genuinely keen on spotting woodland birds or collecting interesting twigs. The river itself is the main draw if the water levels are decent.

Stay at Goldings CL, Stonham Barns, or Hill Farm Suffolk - all within five miles - and you've got a straightforward morning walk without needing to drive far. It works better as part of a broader Ipswich area visit than as a destination in itself. Free to access, and there's limited formal infrastructure, so come prepared. Best visited when the ground isn't waterlogged.
